Remove Water Marks and Discoloration from Wooden Furniture

So you forgot to use a drink coaster and now your wooden furniture has an ugly ring mark. Water can cause discoloration of wood and lead to stains. Don’t panic! All is not lost as there are some great ways to remove the water mark or ring from your wooden furniture and make it shine like new once again.

Before removing any water mark on the wooden furniture, you must first remove any standing water on the surface. All you need to do is simply wipe-up any water present on the surface to reduce any wood discoloration. You can start by removing the water by using a soft cloth and after it has been removed, you may use a soft tissue to remove any excess water and dry the wood as much as possible.

Many times although the wood seems to have a water mark, the shine might have been hampered due to some other reason including the environmental factors. So, before trying any sort of water removal method, you may try using a wood polish to see if the wood discoloration can be removed. If this method doesn’t work, try one of these:

Take a little toothpaste on a soft cloth and rub it on areas having the water ring mark. Allow the toothpaste to sit on the water mark for some time and then wipe it off.

You may also use a little mayonnaise or olive oil in the place of toothpaste and allow it to sit on the water mark for about 15 minutes before taking it off.

Another method is to use warm iron on the water ring or mark. Place a clean cloth over the discolored area of the wood and then cover it with warm iron without any steam. Allow the iron to stay on the cloth for some seconds and then see whether the marks have been removed.

If the wood has a lot of marks or if a large area has been discolored, you may consider using the furniture restoring products available in the home improvement stores to help remove the marks and spots.

When you have tried all of the above but the stubborn water marks still won’t go then consider hiring a professional furniture refinisher to give your furniture a fresh lease of life!
