Challenges of Post Disaster Restoration!

Where there’s fire, there’s smoke…we all know that. But, it’s not as easy as it sounds in real life. After the fire has been extinguished, managing the damage caused by smoke can pose a tough challenge for the fire restoration service providers. There’s no doubt about the fact that fire itself will hugely damage the house, however some house owners fail to realize that the smoke can also create long-lasting damaging effects to the house.

The menacing intruder:

Smoke is the menacing intruder that is highly caustic in nature, smells awful, and may also be toxic. This is one of the biggest challenges of post disaster restoration services, and cleaning the damage induced upon by smoke can be more frustrating than the fire that causes it.

Removing soot from hard-to-reach areas:

The heat caused by fire opens the pores and the pressure developed forces the soot to several areas that are hardly accessible. The particles emitted during the fire are attracted to colder surfaces and they will stick vehemently to the windows, walls and other metal surfaces within the house. Removing the smoke marks and soot from hard to reach places can be really challenging.

Toxic effects of smoke:

After extinguishing the fire, post disaster restoration includes getting rid of the smoke and soot that is visible to the eye, as well as those that are airborne and not visible to the naked eye. These combustion particles widely range in size from about 0.1 to 4 microns. The particles that are smaller in size than one micron will remain suspended in air and this is highly toxic in nature.

When inhaled with air, these particles can get to the digestive track, and penetrate deeper into the lungs to enter the alveoli. If you are lucky then they will simply cause irritation in the alveoli; and in worst case they may cause permanent scarring in the lungs and reduce the overall capacity.

Best way to handle smoke damage:

Cleaning and restoration are the two main mantras that will help you to get over the post fire problems. If the fire breakout was small then you may clean the area yourself to ensure that no amount of odor remains. However, if damage is large scaled then we would recommend that you use the post disaster restoration services offered by Polcan Design Group.
